2010 is an exciting time for Danone. After 12 years of a mutually successful joint venture with Clover, both partners decided the time was right to focus on their respective core activities, Danone acquired the Clover stake and Danone Southern Africa was born.

1919 — The Danone brand is born
Discoveries regarding the health benefits of yoghurt inspire merchant Isaac Carasso to start producing yoghurt as early as 1917. He establishes Danone in 1919 in Spain. It means “little Daniel”, the nickname of his son, who later continues the Danone tradition.

1998 — Danone arrives in South Africa
Danone enters the South African market through a joint venture created with Clover SA. The marriage of that traditional and trusted South African brand with Danone, symbolising quality and innovation, proved to be successful beyond expectations.

2010 — Danone Southern Africa is born
Danone acquires 100% of the Danone Clover joint-venture and Danone Southern Africa is born.

Danone Southern Africa is part of the Danone Group, which has a presence on every continent and in over 120 countries. With 160 plants and around 80 000 employees, the Danone Group is No. 1 worldwide for fresh dairy products. Visit the Danone Group website.
