Since its inception in 2009, the initiative has benefited 50 disadvantaged schools within the Gauteng region. The food gardens are a sustainable means of complementing school feeding programmes, with the purpose of providing children with fresh vegetables and produce, coupled with training to ensure the longevity of school gardens in the local communities.
How To Plant My Own Food Garden
- Measure the bed, 2 metres x 1 metre
- Dig the bed knee-deep
- Half-fill with rubbish. Wet the rubbish. Use only rubbish that will rot.
- Cover the rubbish with soil. Subsoil first. Make the bed 10cm higher than the ground (topsoil)
- Cover with mulch (Dry grass, or you could use dry leaves, dry cut grass, newspapers, stones.
- Plant four or 5 kinds of vegetables. Make 9 rows, about 20 cm apart.
- Water and protect the bed
